(Hermanus Contractus) Loving mother of the Redeemer, gate of heaven, star of the sea, assist your people who have fallen yet strive to rise again, To the wonderment of nature you bore your Creator, yet remained a virgin after as before, You who received Gabriel's joyful greeting, have pity on us poor sinners.

Now there stood by the cross of Jesus, his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalen. When Jesus therefore had seen his mother and the disciple standing whom he loved, he saith to his mother: Woman, behold thy son. After that, he saith to the disciple: Behold thy mother. And from that hour, the disciple took her to his own. (Douay-Rheims)

Dextera Domini fecit virtutem, dextera Domini exaltavit me. Non moriar, sed vivam, et narrabo opera Domini. Alleluia. The right hand of the Lord hath wrought strength; the right hand of the Lord has exalted me. I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord. Alleluia.

Salve Regina, Mater Misericordiae, Vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, Salve! Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Hevae, Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes, In hac lacrimarum valle. Eja ergo, Advocata nostra, Illos tuos misericordes oculos ad nos converte Et Jesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui, Nobis, post hoc exilium, ostende, O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria. Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of mercy, Our life, our sweetness, and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve, To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping In this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious Advocate, Thine eyes of mercy toward us And after this, our exile, show unto us The Blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

O esca viatorum, O panis angelorum, O manna coelitum, Esurientes ciba Dulcedine non priva Corda quaerentium. 2 O lympha, fons amoris, Qui puro Salvatoris E corde profluis Te sitientes pota Haec sola nostra vota, His una sufficis. 3 O Jesu, tuum vultum Quem colimus occultum Sub panis specie. Fac, ut remoto velo Post libera in coelo Cernamus facie. Amen. 1. O food of men wayfaring, The bread of angels sharing, O Manna from on high! We hunger; Lord, supply us, Nor thy delights deny us, Whose hearts to thee draw nigh. 2. O Stream of love past telling. O purest fountain, welling From out the Saviour’s side! We faint with thirst; revive us, Of thine abundance give us, And all we need provide. 3. O Jesu, by thee bidden, We here adore thee, hidden ‘Neath forms of bread and wine. Grant when the veil is riven, We may behold, in heaven, Thy countenance divine.

about

"Woman, Behold Thy Son" is a short survey of the liturgical year from Advent through Paschaltide. Each season begins with its designated Marian antiphon, followed by appropriate propers and motets. Our album spans 1000 years of Catholic repertoire, focusing on music suitable for small vocal ensembles.

Proceeds from this album will go to funding the first season of Gaudete Grand Rapids. Our mission is to perform faithfully the venerable music of the Roman Rite, to evangelize through beauty, and to catechize both clergy and laity in the Diocese of Grand Rapids, MI.

While only five singers are on this recording, we hope to expand our ranks to twelve. Gaudete will be Artist-in-Residence at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish. It will also provide music and support for parishes that wish to celebrate an Extraordinary Form Mass, but are not yet familiar with the form.

We need your help! Support our young, passionate musicians by purchasing our CD. God reward your generosity!

$100---a humble stipend for one singer per Mass.
$1200---an entire Mass.
$6000---an entire season (3 Masses at our our residency, two pro bono Masses at other parishes)
